Newest Updates at the Bottom:
The Athens Area Humane Society is going No-Kill and we will soon be moving into our new facility!
AAHS has some very exciting news. Starting this July we will be transitioning into a No-Kill shelter and we will be preparing to move into our new location inside our spay/neuter center (check back for exact moving date).
If you recall, several months ago we informed the city of our intention to become a no-kill shelter. This transition requires walking away from the city contract making AAHS the open admission intake shelter for Athens-Clarke County. This is not a move that we took lightly. However, we all agreed that the euthanizing of savable animals for the convenience of space should not be the mission of a Humane Society. And we certainly agree donated funds should not be directed toward this purpose.
We wanted to focus resources on saving lives and holding the city contract made this virtually impossible. Therefore, we were left with a tough decision. But, in the end we knew we could not go wrong as long as we focused on doing what is best for the animals in our care.
Therefore, I am proud to announce that AAHS is going NO-KILL.
AAHS will continue to take in socialized animals that are able to be adopted. Please call for appointments (706)353-2287.
Animals taken in by AAHS will be assured the time and treatment needed to become healthy and find their fur-ever home.
AAHS will no longer take in feral (wild) cats that can not be socialized or safely adopted into a home.
AAHS's intake shelter will be relocated inside our spay/neuter center at 1781 Mars Hill Rd, Watkinsville GA 30677 (Check back soon for the moving date).
Our adoption center will stay the same: inside Pet Supplies Plus on Alps Rd. Athens.
Our phone number will stay the same.
We will post regular updates on our website.
We would like to thank every one of our supporters, donors, foster homes, volunteers, staff and friends for making this transition possible. We look forward to working with you in the years to come to save even more of the fuzzy faces that come to us for help. Thank you for allowing us to be the friend that the animals deserve.

July 1st
AAHS will be taking the next 45 days to move into our new location on Mars Hill Rd. For the first few weeks of July we will be busy going through all our supplies, cabinets, and storage buildings to determine what should make the move with us and what should be donated to goodwill or go to the dump.
In the later weeks of July we will start the physical move of supplies and such into our new location. It is our hope to be in our new home during the first and/or second week of August.
Those who are interested in helping with this move can sign up for our e-newsletter and we will send out information as the time comes closer.

Thank you for all the support we have received and your willingness to help in this exciting time of positive change.

We have walls! and doors! and lights, well mostly. This means they will be finished by Friday and we will begin moving on Monday. Our new shelter may be complete on Friday but there is a lot to do before we can open. We need help cleaning up the construction dust, moving things into storage, moving everything from our shelter, setting-up the cat cages, getting offices ready, and bringing the animals over.
If you are able to help, please email me and I will fill you in on the details.
Please note our new adddress is:

The move is complete!!!! Well, almost.....
I would like to send a BIG thank you out to Marty and Miranda Carr, Susan Creasy, Leslie George, and Janet Williamson who, without their help, we never would have been able to move everything out of the shelter.
We may have completely moved to our new shelter location on Mars Hill Road but there is still a lot of things to get done. We are in URGENT need of your help. We still have boxes to unpack, carriers to clean, rooms to sweep and mop, while still caring for the cats in need. If you are able to help, please sign up on the online calendar under Help with the Move.
Come take a tour of the new shelter and while you are here you can help unpack a box. Even just an hour will be a huge help. Click here to sign up to help. Then click on Help with the Move at the bottom of the page. Two people can volunteer for each time slot.
Thank you so much for considering helping, this will be a big help and our staff will be able to concentrate on the health of the animals in our care.
